What is the “Move Over” Law in VA?
The Virginia “Move Over” law basically states that if you see a Virginia police officer on the shoulder of the road, then the driver in the lane closest to the police officer has to either move over to the next lane if possible or slow down significantly.
The VA “Move Over” law was enacted to protect Virginia police officers. It is also known as the Virginia slow down/Virginia move over law. Virginia 46.2-921.1 codifies the move over law in VA.
